I am in the process of completing my fourth semester of membership of the Student Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC) organization. I have been a member of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) student chapter for two semesters. I am in the process of completing my second semester of being President of NSTA.
Being a member of SCEC has been a positive experience. Every meeting we get teacher tips and current volunteer opportunities. There is usually a speaker every meeting that gives us valuable information and/or first-hand experiences with exceptional children. I have benefited from this information because I am going to be a general education teacher and will have children with disabilities and different learning experiences in my classroom. I will be able to use what I have learned from different speakers and from the teacher tips in my future classroom. I have gotten an idea of what it would look and feel like for a child to have a certain disability. This will help me better accommodate learning to fit the needs of these children. This organization is one of the only places where I have gained much knowledge in this area. In addition to this, I have had a pen pal every semester where I write back and forth with an elementary student. This has been valuable for these students to be able to write whatever they want to someone who cares and will respond back to them. It has been valuable for me to see what is going on in some of these children's lives and being able to share a special bond with them. I am also getting ideas of how I can use this same writing strategy when I am a teacher.
I have also gained many experiences inside and outside of being a member and the president of NSTA. We have many speakers come in and do demonstrations or give knowledge of being in a science classroom, different experiments that can be used, information about the hiring process, etc. I have had a great amount of practice with the Battle Creek Science Kits. I have learned about the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and how they will be implemented in the future. All of this experience, knowledge, and practice is stuff that I will not learn in a classroom which is why I feel that I have benefited so much from this organization. We have gone on trips with this organization. One semester we went to the science museum in Chicago. It was good to think of ways in which I could incorporate a field trip to a science museum in my future classroom. I also attended the NSTA national conference in Indianapolis with other NSTA members and professors from Grand Valley State University. I have learned a lot of responsibilities from being the president of this organization. If I didn't contact speakers or have some general plan for each meeting, email reminders to group members, attend financial and other meetings in order to keep our group, we would not be able to have these great learning experiences. I have taken on this responsibility and am achieving this role to the best of my ability; which has taught me a lot of responsibility. I feel that this experience has further prepared me as a future educator. Overall, I have learned many new hands-on experiences and gained much information that I will use in my future classroom from being a part of SCEC and NSTA.
