Instructional Strategies for Objective 1
Choice
I chose a teacher-centered strategy to present the material to students for the first objective.
Description
Students will be working within their small groups to create an illustration of a wetland. They will include at least four distinct features of a wetland in their picture (using ideas from the video that we will watch will be highly recommended). There will be markers, crayons, and colored pencils available for them to use. This poster will be a way to formatively assess students. Students will be watching the Fabulous Wetlands with Bill Nye The Science Guy video (below). This is a way for students to learn the material needed to complete the first objective. I will have students record anything important in their journals, for example, what a wetland is.
Technology
This video will be viewed by the whole class. In order to help facilitate meaningful learning, I will use the PC to project the video onto the pull-down white screen in the front of the room. This will help all of my students see and hear the video being displayed.
I will ask the following questions during the video:
•Pause at 0:51
•Do you think there are wetlands in your neighborhood? (If yes, then where?)
•Pause at 2:07
•What do you think is wrong with building a parking lot on top of a wetland?
•Pause at 4:41 and have them answer the question asked in the video
•STOP video at 6:00

Rationale
I chose to use the Fabulous Wetlands with Bill Nye The Science Guy video because it is accurate and credible. This video was recorded in 1989 at the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge and published on September 21, 2012. This was funded by the National Oceanic Administration (NOAA) under the Coastal Zone Management Act. It was produced by the Washington State Department of Ecology, has a standard YouTube license, and is educational.
I chose to use this video in my classroom to provide information to my students about wetlands. This video will teach students what a wetland is by giving numerous features that make up this particular habitat. Students will be taught the information that they need to know in order to accomplish the first objective and the science and technology standards.
This video will also aid in providing information necessary to the other objectives in this lesson as well. It will teach students how and why this habitat should be preserved, plants and animals that can be found in a wetland, and different specializations of groups of plants and/or animals. I also chose this video because it is engaging for students and presents science content in a fun and entertaining way.
