Instructional Strategies for Objective 2
Choice
I chose a student-centered strategy to help students with retention and interest of material for the second objective.
Description
Students will have to state at least three plants and animals that are native to wetlands. Students will be exploring an interactive wetlands poster. They will click on the different plants and animals on the poster to learn more about them. This is a way to help students retain information they have previously learned that is needed to complete the second objective.
Technology
In order to help facilitate learning, each group of two students will be provided with a computer that is available to our school. They will work together when exploring the interactive wetlands poster. I will first model on my computer how to find and navigate this poster online. Students will be able to see my screen projected onto the pull-down white board in the front of the room. This will help students better understand what they are to do when they have a computer in front of them.
Rationale
I chose to use this strategy with my students because this source is accurate and credible. The interactive wetlands poster was illustrated by nature artist, Larry Duke. The wonderful illustration is full of numerous, real-life, detailed plants and animals. You can learn more information about the plants and animals by clicking on them. This was published from 1994-2013 by the Washington State Department of Ecology. This can be found on Access Washington which is the Official State Government Website at www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/sea/wetlands/poster.html.
I also chose to use this resource with my students because it contains correct information about the plants and animals with accurate images. The copyright section on this site states that linking to this website, using data, and/or using other material is permitted as long as Washington State Department of Ecology is credited. I will use this interactive wetlands poster as a way for students to retain what they have learned about plants and animals and as a way to learn more about them. This will help students fulfill the necessary requirements for the second objective, because students will have to state at least three plants and animals that are native to wetlands. This also helps students meet the science and technology standards for this lesson. My particular group of learners work well together when they can bounce ideas off of each other and gain perspectives other than their own, especially when working with technology. Pairing up my students that have had more experience working with computers with students that have had very little experience will be a good way to facilitate learning in my classroom for this particular strategy.
